How to spot a rental scam
The warning signs of fake listings and agents, and simple habits that keep your money safe when you rent.
Common warning signs
- The rent is far below other houses in the same area.
- You're pressured to pay a viewing fee, deposit or 'booking fee' before you've seen the house.
- The 'landlord' can't meet you at the house or is always away.
- You're asked to pay to a personal number instead of a paybill, till or bank account.
- Photos look like they're from a magazine, or the same photos appear for different houses.
Habits that keep you safe
- Always view the house in person before you pay anything.
- Only pay to the payment options shown on KejaRent for that house, using the account number shown.
- Keep every M-PESA message and bank receipt, and get a written agreement before you move in.
- Talk to the caretaker or neighbours about the landlord and how the building is run.
If something feels wrong
Stop and don't send money. Report the listing to KejaRent at support@kejarent.com with what happened, and if you've already paid, contact your bank or Safaricom immediately and report it to the police.
