Frequently asked questions
Getting started
What is KejaRent?
KejaRent is a Kenyan platform for finding and renting homes. You can search vacant houses, bedsitters and apartments, see photos, prices and locations, chat with landlords, reserve a house and pay rent, all in one place. Landlords use KejaRent Owner to list and manage their properties.
Is KejaRent free for renters?
Yes. Searching, saving houses, chatting with landlords and requesting viewings are free. You only pay what the landlord charges: rent, deposits, and a reservation fee if you choose to reserve a house.
How do I create an account?
Tap Sign in and enter your phone number. We send you a one-time code by SMS; enter it and your account is created. Then add your name and email from your profile so landlords know who they're dealing with and receipts reach you.
Finding a house
How do I search for a house?
Type an area, estate or town into the search bar, or pick one of the popular areas on the home page. Narrow results by price and number of rooms, and switch to the map to see exactly where each house is.
How do I save houses I like?
Tap the heart on any house. Your saved houses appear under Saved houses in your profile menu, grouped by the day you saved them, so you can compare them later.
Can I talk to the landlord before I visit?
Yes. Open a house and use Chat to message the landlord or agent directly. Your conversations are kept under Messages.
How do I arrange a viewing?
Open the house and send a viewing request with a short message about when you'd like to visit. The landlord sees it on their KejaRent Owner dashboard and replies to you.
Reserving a house
What does reserving a house mean?
If the landlord allows it, you can pay a reservation fee to hold a vacant house for a day, a week or a month while you get ready to move in. The house is only held once the fee is paid.
Do I get the reservation fee back?
That depends on the landlord. The fee is usually deducted from your first rent invoice when you move in. Check with the landlord in chat before you reserve if you're unsure.
What happens when my reservation ends?
The landlord contacts you to agree on moving in and adds you as the tenant. If you don't move in before the reservation ends, the house becomes available to others again.
Paying rent
How do I pay rent?
Go to My houses and open your house. You'll see the landlord's payment options, such as an M-PESA paybill or till, or a bank account, with the exact account number to use. Where the landlord has turned it on, Pay now sends a payment prompt to your phone: just enter your PIN.
Does KejaRent hold my money?
Rent is paid to your landlord's own paybill, till or bank account, so it goes straight to them. KejaRent records the payment against your tenancy and updates your balance automatically.
How do I see my balance, invoices and receipts?
Open the house under My houses. You'll find what you owe, your invoices, and every payment you've made with its receipt reference.
I paid but my balance hasn't changed. What do I do?
Payments made with the account number shown on KejaRent usually reflect within minutes. If it's been longer, check you used the correct account number, then message your landlord with your M-PESA or bank reference so they can match it.
Living in your house
How do I sign my rental agreement?
When the landlord sends your agreement, it appears under your house in My houses. Read it, then sign it online. Your landlord can also upload an agreement you've signed on paper.
How do I report a problem in my house?
Open your house under My houses and choose Report a problem. Describe what's wrong, pick a category such as plumbing or electrical, and add a photo if you can. You can follow the request's progress from the same page.
How do I move out?
Tell your landlord in chat when you plan to leave, following the notice period in your agreement. They confirm your final balance and any deposit refund on KejaRent when they end the tenancy.
Safety and your account
How do I avoid rental scams?
View the house in person before paying anything, and only pay to the payment options shown on KejaRent for that house. Never send money to a personal number because someone asks you to over the phone. If a listing looks wrong, report it to us.
How does KejaRent protect my information?
Your phone number and email are only shared with landlords of houses you contact or rent. Read our privacy policy for the details of what we collect and why.
How do I delete my account?
Go to the account deletion page, confirm your phone number with the code we send you, and your account and personal data will be deleted.
How do I contact KejaRent?
Email support@kejarent.com and we'll get back to you. For questions about a specific house, payment or agreement, messaging the landlord in chat is usually fastest.
For landlords
How do I list my property on KejaRent?
