What it really costs to move into a rental in Kenya

Deposits, first month's rent, utilities and the small costs people forget, so you can plan your move without surprises.

Upfront costs

  • First month's rent, paid before you move in.
  • A rent deposit, commonly one or two months' rent.
  • Sometimes a water or electricity deposit.
  • A reservation fee if you reserved the house; usually deducted from your first invoice.

Monthly costs beyond rent

  • Electricity tokens and water bills.
  • Garbage collection and service charge.
  • Internet, if the building doesn't include it.

Plan ahead

Ask the landlord for a full list of charges before you commit. On KejaRent, a house's charges are shown alongside the rent, and your invoices break down everything you owe.
